Program Overview

Open Wings Learning Community is a school environment that nurtures deep and meaningful learning through a balanced experiential and integrated educational strategy. Teaching is focused on the whole child, with the individual strengths, challenges, and needs of each student in mind. We draw children in by incorporating their interests into a learning environment rich in the arts, technology, and community connections that are designed to enrich the learning experience.

While we keep a close eye on state and national education standards, we benchmark our students and create future plans, based on their own progress. We have seen significant and measurable growth in past and current students. We have a decade of experience helping families thrive now and building a strong foundation for positive learning outcomes for each student in the future.

Open Wings is a school that serves children whose needs are not met in traditional settings due to normal school constraints, including large class sizes and curricular pacing. Our educational philosophy allows many students to thrive, but we specifically welcome neurodiverse students with language delays, dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), sensory issues, and autism - and their siblings and friends. All learners in our community add to the range of neurodiversity in our school and succeed with our individualized curricular approach.

  • Each student’s educational process begins by understanding the needs, interests, questions, motivations, and diverse life experiences of the individual as we work to create a meaningful teaching and learning context and plan.
  • Students learn by doing: by collaborating with educators and one another to construct knowledge within the school community, and by engaging as active community members in the world beyond our walls.
  • Dynamic learning communities are created when teachers and students work together, grounded in cycles of inquiry, action, and assessment.

Simply stated, students learn best through experiential learning and discovery. Our purpose at Open Wings is to help students to develop critical thinking skills, while becoming thoughtful, participating citizens in their communities. Our team of dedicated educators and volunteers aims to provide our students with the learning opportunities that allow them to build bright, successful, and independent futures.

Open Wings Learning Community is a school that focuses on the whole child.
